We Have A Wedding Venue!

Good news! We have a wedding venue!

We did not expect it to happen so soon. I expected to bombard you with different venues, hemming and hawing at our favourite choices and figuring out which fit our budget and which didn’t.

Our criteria for our venue was that it had to serve for both our ceremony as well as the reception and that it needed to have character. We were definitely not looking for an empty hall where we’d have to spend a ton of money to make it look good, we wanted something with enough character that we could utilize it as part of the decorations. We’re also a couple with character and leaned towards a more rustic look. As much as a regular “hall” would have been MUCH cheaper, we were happy to spend a little more on a venue that people would talk about.

Enter The Enoch Turner Schoolhouse!

Founded in 1848 by a brewer named Enoch Turner, this was Toronto’s first free school for many of the area’s poorer immigrants for about ten years. It’s since been used as a Sunday school, Parish hall, a Boer War recruitment centre, a serviceman’s home away from home during both World Wars, a soup kitchen, a youth clubhouse and now an event centre. It has become quite a popular place for weddings in Toronto as not only is it such a charming venue but it’s located in a historic part of Toronto (it’s called “Corktown” for a reason – many of the areas original inhabitants came from Southern Ireland).

It was character we wanted and it’s character we go! Check it out!

This is the smaller school room which can serve as a breakout room for when the hall is being flipped. It’s sooo charming!

This is the main hall. I LOVE the window and the pillars! And it’s more spacious in person than it seems!

The main entrance ends up being converted into the bar area (the reception desk actually becomes the bar – the picture is too blurry to show though).

Alan and I are in love with this place and we can’t wait to get things moving! The only downfall is that almost nothing else is included with the venue other than the space and a bunch of rickety old chairs and tables but it’s also one of the more inexpensive venues that we looked at so that’s probably why. Apparently we can pay the janitor $25 and he’ll add some lights on the pillars though! :) But that’s alright, we’re looking for simple decorations as is and, as mentioned, the space provides enough decoration!

So right now, as it stands, our wedding date is now set for Friday, October 5, 2012! WOO HOO!!!

Now currently in negotiations with the venue’s “preferred caterers” over a menu. Hopefully by the end of September we’ll have a caterer booked and the biggest expenses will be done! I’ll give you and update on all the caterers we’re talking to and how experiences with them soon!
