Today was a fabulous day! Two years ago I got to see the musical Jersey Boys and immediately knew I just had to take my mother to see it. Finally, I managed to make it happen! Alan and I decided to take our mothers to it for a Mother’s Day gift! We got together at noon to have lunch at Milestones where we shared a plate of spinach and artichoke dip (soooo yummy) and then I had their new “Fresh Spinach and Tomato Capellini” that featured grape tomatoes, fresh spinach, basil and garlic with capellini noodles and goat cheese! Holy yum! Mom and I split a bottle(!) of a 2007 6th Sense Syrah from the Michael David Winery in California.
Aren’t they the cutest?!
I LOVE this picture of my mother and I. I realized that we don’t have any recent photos of the two of us together. That must change. Stat!
A few fun facts about my mom!
- She’s recently started her own business! She offers environmentally friendly cloth diaper services to expectant and new mothers! Check her out: Daisy Fresh Diaper Service
- She and my father have been married for coming up on 39 YEARS!!! I know! My parents are still together! Rock on!
- She’s an amazing painter and when I was younger won an award for a gorgeous ceramic vase she painted (I was so proud that I would constantly put the ribbon on the outside of it and she would come along and pop that ribbon back inside of it).
- She also quilts and scrapbooks which makes for some pretty cool and unique gifts!
- She’s one of the most generous people you’ll ever meet! She’s forever bringing stuff over to the house for Alan and myself and if she sees it on sale she’ll pick it up and find someone to give it to!
We all had a blast at the musical. What I like about Jersey Boys is that it’s not like a regular Broadway-esque type of musical. It’s more like a concert with a narrative. Jersey Boys is the story of The Four Seasons so you know ALL the songs to it and everyone sings and dances along with the actors. And WHAT actors! The voices on these folks are phenomenal. I highly recommend seeing this show if you haven’t already.
I’m so happy that we were able to do this for our Mother’s. They are both phenomenal women that work hard and love us kids (and our siblings) more than any other Mom’s I know! Happy Mother’s Day ladies!!!!
This evening we FINALLY had those artichokes! In fact, we ended up having for dinner tonight what I planned on last night! We had our artichokes with red pepper aioli and black bean millet patties along with some leftover salad.
I confess that I’ve NEVER eaten an artichoke if it didn’t come in a can. Alan and I were both a little confused although we Googled it. Neither of us know what a “quality” artichoke looks like, how do you choose a proper artichoke? The marinade for them wasn’t all that flavourful, I think we could have added a bit more lemon juice and more flavourful herbs.
The Red Pepper Aioli was also a bit disappointing. It called for vegan mayo which right off the bat wasn’t very good because neither Alan nor myself like mayo in any form but we thought we’d give it a chance. It was alright with the artichokes and probably would be pretty tasty with sweet potato fries but I think if I knocked the vegan mayo back to 1 cup instead of 1 2/3 cup it may have been better.
Still lovin’ the millet patties though! I decided to squirt a little bit of Frank’s Chilli & Lime hot sauce on them! YUM!
And for dessert, my mother brought us over a small cooler with goodies this morning! Two t-bone steaks for Alan and two packages of Yves tempeh for me and some of mom’s famous Sweet Marie bars for a treat!
Mom used to make these all the time when I was younger and the pan wouldn’t last the night! It’s basically a peanut butter Rice Krispie Square with melted chocolate on top! Oh yes, to die for!
Tomorrow morning Alan and I are going to try get a yard sale going. The wind was so strong today that we could barely get from the theatre back to the car in one piece. I have NEVER felt wind so strong and I was in the middle of a hurricane once! The weather tonight is supposed to be windy, rainy and possibly SNOWY so we’ll have to see what happens first thing in the morning. However, I am hoping that by also having homemade cookies for sale that’ll bring out some of the neighbours so stay tuned on how I give my neighbourhood some vegan chocolate cookies!
